HE

He gazed back towards me as he was leaving.
His eyes saying so much more than in those brief seconds.
More so than even he ever had.
I had been mistaken.
He was not a fighter in any light.
He only wanted quiet to take the place of constant disarray.
I know that I am somehow to blame for the choice he made.
I should have listened to his voice a little clearer,
Tuned in to the yearning inside.
Knowing what it truly had been when it seemed to be indifference.
So when Chance asked for him I let him go.
His eyes explaining what he could not.
He never wished for this affair.
Still Chance would tempt his death.
And I could not fight.
So I live on,
In shame and in guilt,
Because I let love pass me by,
I couldn't raise myself to lift a hand to take him back when Death
became his fortune.
